Thread Rolling There are two main ways to
thread material for production, rolling or cutting. Thread rolling
is a common process of forming threads. A die, which is a hardened
tool with the thread profile, is pressed on to a rotating blank. As
the force is gradually increased, the thread profile is transferred
to the blank as it is displaced radially outward to form the crests.
This process produces screws with greater strength than cut threads
due to the cold forming. The process of
cold forming produces fine surface finishes, higher production
rates, and no chips. By using
this method, the blanks start with a diameter between the major and
minor diameter of the finished thread, as opposed to cutting, in

which the blank starts at the major diameter. We save you money in
the material costs, because material is neither removed or wasted,
but rather displaced.![]() Compared to cut threads formed threads have a very smooth finish and added tensile strength. Thread forming or rolling can be performed on a variety of turning machines using special holders and rollers but with some limiting factors, such as length and maximum diameter. However, here at Smithfield Manufacturing we offer the same technique without those factors. We currently have and maintain four machines built specifically for thread rolling. The benefits for using these types of machines include reduced cycle times, larger diameter capacity
and the ability to through feed without length factors and with thread rolling we are not limited to
specific types of threads. Our thread rolling team works closely together with each other, our Quality Department and Production Scheduling, to meet our customer demands, from production through quality to delivery. Through our company’s continuous improvement policy, we evaluate the most productive means of manufacturing, to include setting up production cells for large contract orders. Since Smithfield Manufacturing, Inc.'s foundation in 1952, we have accumulated a wide range of thread rolls, made from D2 and M1 tool steel. Various kinds of threading: UNC, UNF, NC, NF Acme Thread, Metric, Worm,
Whitworth, U shaped, straight pattern or diamond pattern knurling.
